The Return of the Shadow

The Return of the Shadow - J.R.R. Tolkien, Christopher Tolkien A fascinating look at a master sub-creator, as he discovers what really happened in the tale he recounts. There are parts where he is thinking out loud as it were, feeling his way through the story and trying to sort it all out. So much is different while other things are the same almost from the first draft. There are things I wish had survived into the final published version, but also things I am glad were changed. I find this particularly interesting to read now, as I am in the midst of sub-creation myself and having the same struggles of figuring what is happening, so I can faithfully portray the events and people in my tale. Wonderful for any serious Tolkien fan, especially anyone who is a fellow discoverer of worlds.
